Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that afflicts over 1 million Americans, with an additional 50,000 to 60,000 new cases identified each year. It is estimated that as many as 10 million people around the world suffer from the condition1. Historically, movement disorders have been primarily diagnosed through clinical examinations. However, clinical exams alone, particularly early in the disease, are often inconclusive and can result in misdiagnosis. In fact, an accurate diagnosis for patients with neurodegenerative movement disorders, such as PD, has taken up to six years. Many publications report misdiagnosis rates between 20 – 30% which means that many patients who are currently being treated for PD do not in fact have it. A timely and correct diagnosis will help patients and their families overcome the fears and frustrations associated with the process of getting an accurate diagnosis so they can move on with their lives 2,3. Additionally, the medications used to treat PD can have significant side effects.
CereScan is proud to be the first center in the Rocky Mountain Region to offer DaTscan™, the first FDA-approved imaging agent to help differentiate PD from similar syndromes, such essential tremor or Lewy body dementia.

DaTscan™ is performed by injecting a tiny dose of a radiopharmaceutical, followed by a SPECT scan, to assess the level of dopamine transporter (DaT) in a person’s brain. Dopamine, a brain chemical responsible for movement control, diminishes in patients with PD causing tremors, slowness of movement, muscle stiffness and balance problems.
The DaTscan™ procedure is painless and safe, and while it has only recently been approved by the FDA for use in the United States, a similar procedure has been used widely in Europe since 2000 and has been performed on over 500,000 patients.
